Great crowds assembled to listen to him and to be cured of their ailments, but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray. (Luke 5:15b-16)
After Jesus heals the leper, despite his instructions to keep things quiet, the news of the miracle spreads and crowds gather to hear him and want to be cured. In response, Jesus would withdraw to deserted places to pray. He simply takes time to rest and to pray. What a beautiful lesson for us to learn here. It seems our lives lately have gotten so busy with things we think we “should” do. Our “to do” list is getting longer and longer every day and we can’t figure out what we “ought” to do. We begin to lose our sense of purpose in life. How do we get back to the right track despite there is too much work that needs to be done? Learn from what Jesus did. He drew away in solitude to pray. He didn’t take a mini vacation to recuperate from a big vacation. He moved away to reconnect with the Father so he could continue His mission on earth. As you are aware that I just had a major surgery and felt like a "shark bite to my stomach". Before and after my surgery, I was constantly reminded that I need to take time to rest. “Rest! What does that mean?” I responded. It has been a challenge for me, but I have accepted that rest is an important element in recovery after a major surgery, but too much rest can lead to harm, I think. How much rest is enough rest? Is there such a thing as too much rest? Is “taking it easy” enough, and for how long? It’s a delicate task, depends the individual and on the type of surgery. Resting “properly” is trickier and more important than most people realize. How do you strike that balance, so you can rest and recover? I hope this thought may benefit you when you are overwhelmed and need time to REST.
R.E.S.T. is an acronym for Reflect, Evaluate, Switch, and Transform
+ Reflect- take time to reflect on “What does God want me to do this circumstance of my life?”
+ Evaluate- take time to evaluate your attitude when God is trying to speak to you through your suffering or through the healing hands of others.
+ Switch- switch your “control mechanism” from “letting go” to “letting God”
+ Transform-give room in your mind and heart to let God handle the healing and the change
Jesus needed rest and so do you!
What are some ways you’ve found to REST properly?
till and know that I am God,” Psalm 46:11
