Joseph, a Righteous Man
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. (Mt 1:19)
Happy Feast Day to those who choose St. Joseph as their patron Saint!
Today the Universal Church celebrates St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus. The Scripture doesn’t say much about Joseph except in Matthew’s Gospel. St. Matthew tells us that Joseph is “a righteous man”. The word “righteous” has two meanings: (1) the common usage of the word tends to associate with “justice”, what is not yours you do not accept. Joseph knew Jesus was not his therefore he wanted to leave quietly. (2) The biblical meaning: Joseph “a righteous man” means that he is completely open to all that God wanted to do for him. He became holy by opening himself totally to God.
As we celebrate St. Josephs’ Feast Day, may we be especially grateful to his virtue, seeking always to do God’s will in our lives.
Prayer for St. Joseph's Protection
Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so prompt, so strong, before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of fathers.
Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while he reposes near your heart. Press him in my name and kiss his fine head for me and ask him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath.
St. Joseph, patron of departing souls - pray for me.
Amen. (EWTN)
