Parable of the Tenants
Therefore, I say to you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit. (Mt 21:45)
In today’s gospel reading, Jesus tells the chief priest and the elders the Parable of the Tenants. In this parable, a landowner plants a vineyard. When it is time for the harvest, he sends his servants to collect the harvest from the tenants who were left in charge of the vineyard. Tenants beat the servants and kill some of them. The landowner sends his son next, and they kill him. Jesus asks the chief priest and elders what will the vineyard owner do to those tenants when he comes? They reply that they should be put to death and the vineyard leased to other tenants who will give the owner his produce. When they realized that this parable was about them, they became angry and attempted to arrest Jesus.
This parable reminds us that we too have been given charge of the kingdom like the tenants. We have a responsibility to God and his people and that there will be consequences for rejecting God’s message and his Son.
Are we being responsible in our care for God’s kingdom? Are we being responsible for the care of his people?
