The Spirit of Truth
“Jesus said to his disciples: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.” (Jn 16:12)
In today’s gospel, we hear Jesus tell his disciples that the Holy Spirit will guide them to the truth. The Holy Spirit guides us all to the truth. Through Jesus’ relationship with the Father and the Holy Spirit, he shows us that the gifts of truth and faith are to be shared. This truth motivates us to continue to give of ourselves in word and deed to all those we encounter. The Holy Spirit helps us to unfold God’s message at the appropriate times in our lives guiding us in our daily actions. In prayer, we ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten us when we are wrestling with a Church teaching, unsure of the meaning of a Scripture passage, or trying to apply our faith to a concrete problem in our life. In prayer, we ask the Holy Spirit to keep our minds and hearts open to hearing and understanding his message. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would guide us to all truth. We know that he will always speak the truth no matter how difficult it may be for us to hear or understand. We pray for the Holy Spirit to keep us on the path of righteousness and lead us to doing the Lord’s will. Spend a few moments in quiet contemplation praying for guidance from the Holy Spirit. Ask yourself, “What is the Holy Spirit trying to say to me today?”
